Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart! The mere mention of his name evokes the musical genius of the man and his inspiring, unforgettable music that is still so much a part of our lives in the 21st century. Amadeus, Peter Shaffer's extraordinary award-winning play, is told from the point of view of the charming, manipulative and sometimes malevolent 18th century Viennese court composer, Antonio Salieri, who when he meets the young Amadeus is forced to confront the limitations of his own musical talent. Shaffer's masterful storytelling not only draws us into Salieri's relationship with Mozart, but also into the middle of Salieri's private war with God who, in his mind, has betrayed him by giving Mozart the musical talent Salieri feels he deserves. Shaffer's script transcends its 18th century setting to confront contemporary audiences with eternal moral truths and the sometimes terrifying results of accepting them.

Since Salieri's perceived rivalry with Mozart is a musical one, Mozart's music is essential to the underlying structure of the play. The Clarence Brown Theatre Company under the direction of Artistic Director Calvin MacLean along with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Lucas Richman are collaborating on the Clarence Brown Theatre stage to weave the music of Mozart and Salieri seamlessly into Shaffer's story in what promises to be an amazing theatrical and musical experience.

The CBT's production stars John Feltch as Salieri, Brian Sills as Mozart, Amelia Mathews as Constanze, Terry Weber as Joseph II, Rick Peeples as Von Strack, Ben Werling as Baron von Swieten, David Dwyer as Orsini-Rosenberg, Donald Thorne as Kappelmeister Bonno, along with other members of the Clarence Brown Company and the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. Bill Black is the costume designer, Ron Keller, scenic designer, John Horner, lighting designer and Zach Williamson, sound designer.

Amadeus is the season opener for both the CBT and the KSO. The production previews on Wednesday, September 8, opening night is Thursday, September 9, and runs through Sunday, September 19.

Recommended for ages 14 and up.
