Director Q & A

by Kate Buckley

1. Who do you think this play will resonant with and why?

I hope that the the play will resonant with anyone interested in the roots of American music, the struggles women had (and still have) in being recognized for their work and intelligence, and those interested in fine acting, design and storytelling.

2. What challenges have you encountered in directing the show?

Our first challenge was to create a space for two actors on the large Clarence Brown stage. Through great collaboration with the designers, I think we have met the challenge. Our audiences will see a new stage in this venue. We have also been very aware of telling this story as a drama, with humor and song, rather than treating it as a musical. We are also aware of one issue that the playwright has stressed to me: that this is not a star vehicle for one actress, but is an acting "duet." In other words, both women have strong objectives, and that they are each highly intelligent, even though their backgrounds are widely different.
